Theory:

1. Knowledge of the following vocal styles: Dhrupad, Dhamar, Gazal, Tappa
2. History of tabla: Modification and progression from ancient to modern era
3. Knowledge of all Tabla Gharanas and their playing style/baaj.
4. Knowledge of accompaniment with vocal, instrumental, & dance.
5. Ability to write notations in Aad, Biad, and Kuad Laya of Teentaal, Jhaptaal and Rupak taal
6. Definition of the following terms:

Aamad, Tipalli, Chaupalli, Gat kayda, Kamaali Chakradar

7. Biography of the following Tabla players and their contribution to music:

1. U. Ahmedjaan Thirakwa,
2. U. Amir Hussain Khan sahab,
3. U. Allarakhan,
4. U. Habibuddin Khan,
5. Pt. Samta Prasad (Gudai Maharaj),
6. U. Afaak Hussain,
7. Swami Pagaldas Ji
8. Raja Chhatrapati Singh (Joodev)

8. Essay on topics relevant to taal and tabla.

9. Comparative study of the following terms:

        Tabla – Peshkar, Kayda, Rela

Practical:

1. Recite and play the following taal thekas by hand in ekgun and dugun laya.

        Tabla: Jhoomra, Punjabi, Dhamaar

2. Ability to do accompaniment with Bada Khyaal in Ektaal and Teentaal.

3. Ability to join the sum by playing mukhdas in vilambit laya in the above mentioned taals (i.e Jhoomra, Punjabi, Dhamar)

4. Knowledge of tuning of tabla

5. Improvisation in following taals:

a) Teen Taal : Ability to perform up to 20 minutes solo with -

• • Peshkar
  • Kayda of Tishra & Chatushra jaati
  • Relas of Titkit, Dhirdhir, and dintak
  • Gat , Chakradar tukda etc

b) Ability to play Rupak, Jhaptaal, and Ektaal with Kayda, tukda, rela etc. (minimum two variations) well-prepared.

c) Ability to play the theka of Teen Taal in drut laya.

Score-Card:

Note: 

1. 35 minutes will be allotted to every candidate for his/her examination.
2. Students should perform with the Lehra/Nagma.
